Overcoming Maps 3
a personal reflection by Jaco

|
As an artist, you easily get mapped in, not only by your
own country’s borders, but also by your background,
present situation, thoughts on art and even your own
art.
Overcoming Maps 3 tour gave me the incredible
opportunity to interact with artists from so many
different art-making traditions from different
countries. We had the opportunity to share our art but
also to be enriched by each other’s thought and ideas on
art. My respect and appreciation has grown immensely for
the dedication of the artists toward their art in spite
of the different and sometimes trying circumstances in
the different countries.
The opportunity to experience your own art and thoughts
on art in a much wider context than usual was such an
empowering experience.
It has sharpened our thoughts on what we are busy with.
It has strengthened our hearts to keep doing what we
love most.
It has stimulated our creativity to look beyond what we
have done up to now.
It has enriched our lives with friendship that will keep
growing in years to come.
It has confirmed our respect for fellow artists that are
dedicated to follow their conviction to art.
In short, the tour has helped us in “overcoming maps” on
so many levels.
My greatest thanks and appreciation go to PACA and their
dedicated team that has made this tour possible. I
greatly respect their dedication toward their vision to
take contemporary art from Africa beyond all boundaries.
My thanks also go to the Prince Clause Fund that made
this tour possible with their support.
