Foreword
The idea of artists getting themselves
together to travel across countries to meet with their
counterparts, exhibit works, discuss and visit places of
artistic interest, and eat together is a very powerful
and effective way of taking a refreshing journey into
the depth of the profession itself. It can be a most
rewarding experience for those who are prepared to drink
from the often overwhelming experience. This tradition
is as old as art itself. It is very African.
Overcoming Maps though, is a calculated negotiation of
this tradition, very novel. Considering the almost iron
cast boundaries that exist even in the West African
sub-region it is bold and ambitious. Taking place in an
era where there is a gradual attempt by reason of
information technology to exalt virtual experience over
physical encounters, the project in a sense points to an
African legacy that is timeless, and sustains authentic
and enduring human interaction without which we stand
the risk of one day loosing our very humanity.
The mystery of physical touch and face to
face encounter is the very essence of art. That is the
point that has been made by Overcoming Maps 3. This book
only extends and perpetuates the experience.
